Announcing the 2011 DEARBORN POLICE CHARITY BALL
The Dearborn Police Officers Charities, Inc. is celebrating our 10th year with our 2011 Dearborn Police Charity Ball. The charity ball will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn with the champagne hour beginning at 6:00pm. The event is a formal dinner dance (black tie optional) which will include gourmet food, entertainment performed by the Swing Shift Orchestra an 18 piece brass band, and an impressive silent auction.
The Dearborn Police Charity Organization was founded in 2001 by a dedicated group of Dearborn Police Officers. The organization’s mission is to maintain a tax-exempt non-profit charity that provides immediate financial assistance to members of the Dearborn community, police officers and their families during times of personal crisis. We are a tax-exempt non-profit organization endorsed by Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. and the Chief of Police, Ronald Haddad. Our charity is a 501-C3 (ID#38-3601372) recognized by the Internal Revenue Service and all donations are fully tax deductible.
Since its inception, the Dearborn Police Charity Organization has provided over $400,000.00 in direct financial support to residents of Dearborn, to officers who protect and serve them and other individuals in need. In most instances, the funds donated go to support those stricken with life threatening illnesses or injuries that inhibit the individual’s ability to work or offset medical costs that can drain a family’s financial resources.
Some of those that we have helped with our donations include:
Fallen Police Officers: Brian Terry-Border Patrol Officer Larry Nehasil-Livonia Police Officer Brian Huff-Detroit Police Department Thin Blue Line of Michigan Divine Child student with brain tumor Leah Happy Hearts City of Dearborn worker Wayne County Deputy injured in accident Brownstown Police Officer accident Dearborn Family with house fire Allen Park Police Officer’s wife with cancer Dearborn Elementary student with brain cancer Shop with a Cop/Fireman (Wal-Mart)
The Charity Ball is an excellent way to involve the business community in this worthy cause. As a long time business owner in the City of Dearborn, we are cordially inviting you to participate by helping to sponsor the event, donating an item, service, or gift certificate to be auctioned off or join us by your attendance. Your generous support is greatly appreciated by those from our community who are in need!

Recently, the Retired Dearborn Police and Fire Association invited me to their general meeting. It was nice to see all the many familiar faces. I touched on many topical subjects regarding pensions, collective bargaining, health care, and Public Act 312. I provided the latest information that I had on the current legislative efforts in Lansing and the local issues in Dearborn. It was my honor to speak to these senior veterans and I thanked them on behalf of all the active members for the road that they paved for us.
The Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) is playing a vital role in Lansing to preserve our rights and benefits. Legislative director Ken Grabowski along with general council Frank Guido are vigilant in their efforts to find viable solutions to the challenges that exist today as it relates to collective bargaining. I, along with the POAM Executive Board sat in on legislative hearings in Lansing regarding the move to eliminate P.A. 312. Everyone should know that POAM and POAD is doing all that we can to convince the legislature that collective bargaining and compulsory arbitration does in fact work and that our union is at the forefront when it comes to reasonableness.
At the local level, on March 29th 2011, Chief Haddad implemented a reclassification of the Sergeant rank which recognized the eight remaining Detective Sergeants. President Mark Tobias informed me that his membership voted to accept the D/Sgt's into the Lieutenants and Sergeants Association. This action brings finality to a rank that has been often controversial yet extremely vital to the Department and the citizens of Dearborn. POAD supported this administrative move by Chief Haddad, as it brings closure to a sore subject and will allow the Department to move forward and not look back. The restructuring allows management to operate more efficiently, gives flexibility and more membership to the LSA, opens potential promotion opportunities to the members of POAD, and most importantly will ensure that the citizens of Dearborn are served well.
In 2004 the POAD successfully organized a petition drive campaign regarding minimum police staffing which had overwhelming support from the public. This action ultimately amended the City Charter to provide 2.1 sworn full time officers per 1,000 residents. Results of the 2010 U.S. Census were 98,153 for the City of Dearborn, a slight increase from the 2000 U.S. Census. This slight up tick is a remarkable accomplishment for the City of Dearborn. I believe it is a direct result of the tireless efforts of all the members of the Dearborn Police Department. Their diligent work has kept Dearborn a safe and attractive community that people want to be a part of. With the State of Michigan experiencing difficulty keeping its residents, the entire City of Dearborn, should be proud of their community and the services that we offer.
In these difficult times, the Police Officers Association of Dearborn more than ever appreciates the never ending support that we get from all of the citizens of Dearborn. May I assure you that this membership will continue to provide top notch police services and promises to work with Chief Haddad and Mayor O'Reilly to keep Dearborn clean and safe.
Until next time,
Best Regards,
Cpl. Gregg Allgeier President -Police Officer's Association of Dearborn
