1st DETROIT WALK FOR APRAXIA!

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a neurologically based motor-speech disorder. Apraxia causes children to have difficulty making sounds, syllables, and words. The brain knows what the child wants to say, but there is a problem getting the signals needed to move the child’s lips, jaw, and tongue in order to produce speech. Children with apraxia of speech require frequent and intensive speech therapy designed to improve the planning, sequencing, and coordination of movements for speech.

FROM THE WALK COORDINATORS: OUR INSPIRATION...
"Our son Eric is our inspiration for this walk. He is a fun, loving, enthusiastic, typical 5 year old boy. He loves to wrestle with his brothers, ride his bike, and play with trucks. You would never know that Eric was different then a typical child until you tried to talk with him. He talks up a storm, but some one who does not know Eric would barely be able to understand any of the words he is saying. At the age of 5, Eric has an expressive language of a 2 year old.

Eric was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) at the age of 3. From that moment on we have done everything we can to educate ourselves on Apraxia and the best resource we have found is CASANA. They have provided us with documents, letters, and just a listening ear and advise when ever we needed it.

We are so thankful to CASANA! We hope to give back and raise money for them to help educate other families like ours. The proceeds for this walk will benefit CASANA research products, education projects, and informative conferences.

Please join us on September 12, 2010 as we bring together our community in supporting CASANA and raising awareness of Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Thank you! ~ Eric's parents, Steve & Stephanie

Register to walk by August 20, 2010 to receive your Apraxia Walk T-Shirt!

Word from the President PDF Print E-mail

In this message I would like to recognize all of our 158 members.

Starting with the largest division (Patrol), the men and women of the Dearborn Police Department Patrol Division are truly the backbone of the department.  Day in and day out they tirelessly perform their patrol duties beyond expectations. Patrol work requires the ability to be a "Jack of all trades", and because of that they deserve the highest compliment.  Those who have chosen to stay on Patrol for their careers are usually the best at it.  They can handle just about every situation that comes their way, with little or no supervision.  Experience is the key factor. Just like the old saying "the older you get, the smarter your father becomes".

A typical Day shift runs the gamut, with officers handling everything from traffic accidents to serious, in progress crimes. Coffee is the popular choice of beverage.

Afternoon shift officers are tasked with the highest volume of dispatched runs.  Officers on that shift typically have the highest numbers of arrests and tickets due to the demands placed on them by sheer volume.

The midnight officers are a breed of their own.  These folks have the ability to work under difficult conditions with an acquired knack to catch the bad guys who dare lurk about.  Because of the unique conditions and criminal element, they often find themselves operating as one, uniformed network, akin to a Special Operation Unit.

Supporting the Patrol Division are the Special Operations Unit, the S.W.A.T. Team, and the Narcotics Unit.  Not only do they compliment the Patrol Division, but the Patrol Division pays back the favor from time to time.

Special Operations Officers are as dedicated as they come, willing to be flexible with their schedules in order to be effective.  They track crime patterns, and make adjustments accordingly, to address major crimes such as Robbery and Stolen Vehicles. Their job is ever changing due to the unpredictability of the criminal activity.  Officer skill levels in this unit are recognized, as they utilize the utmost patience while they are on surveillance, in their quest to thwart crime.

The current members of the Narcotics Unit have broken all records, to date, regarding arrest/seizures.  These officers spend countless amounts of investigative hours to assure that their efforts result in successful prosecutions.  Networking with the Special Operations Unit helps to keep Dearborn citizens safe from drug related crimes.

The members of the Dearborn Police S.W.A.T. team uphold the long standing tradition of working as one.  These officers are constantly training.  That training has proved to pay off in spades.  Although there have been many serious incidents over the course on their inception, the most recent call out exemplifies the teams cohesive skills, and ability to get the job done.

Members of these aforementioned Units often work hand in hand assisting each other, and the Patrol Division with their expertise.  Their dedication and loyalty to their Units often takes its toll on officers personal lives. They should be commended for their efforts and dedication.

The Bomb Squad and the Hostage negotiators also play a huge part.  They often times find themselves smack dab in the middle of it, on a moments notice.  Like the S.W.A.T. team, their training and experience are an asset to the department.  Their individual sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

Members of the Training Office and the Traffic Safety Bureau are crucial to the Departments operation.  Along with the Internet Technology Unit and Support Services, these officers are extremely experienced in their respective fields, and provide an invaluable service to the citizens and the Department as a whole.

The Detective Bureau is made of seasoned Detective Sergeants and newer Cpl. Investigators.  These officers are responsible for all cases that require further investigation.  Cases can be as simple as a civil dispute, all the way to homicide. Two Record Bureau Detective Sergeants and one Cpl. Investigator respond to and process crime scenes, along with reviewing fingerprints, and other important criminal history records. We are in a transition phase in this unit, and are lucky to still have the Detective Sergeants experience on hand.  The Department is in the process of reorganizing this unit, and the citizens can rest assured that the experience level shall pass on to the Cpl. Investigators without a hitch.

It is my opinion that every officer in our association has an important role to play.  Working together, I can say for certain, that the members of the Police Officers Association of Dearborn provide the best and most professional police service to the citizens of Dearborn.

Until next time, be safe.

Fraternally,

Cpl. Gregg Allgeier
President -Police Officer's Association of Dearborn
